The cross-country skiing event between the Fassa and Fiemme valleys
The Marcialonga is one of the most important cross-country skiing events in Italy, known as the Queen of Granfondo, which is preparing to celebrate its 52nd edition.
Every year, on the last Sunday in January, this event takes place in the Fiemme and Fassa valleys in an extraordinary natural setting surrounded by the Dolomites, a natural heritage that makes Trentino one of the most popular and visited regions in Europe.
This event involves athletes, fans and spectators from all over the world and represents a true tradition for the local communities.

The roots and track of a skiing legend
In 1971, inspired by the unforgettable experience of the Vasaloppet in Sweden, four friends from Trentino decided to create something equally extraordinary in the Fiemme and Fassa Valleys, in the heart of the Dolomites. With few means but great enthusiasm, they organised the first edition: 70 kilometres between Canazei and Cavalese, combining sport and spectacular scenery. Right from the start, the event attracted over 1,100 participants, establishing itself as a success.
Over the years, it has grown to become one of the most prestigious cross-country ski races in the world, receiving international awards including the title of best ‘Ski Classics’ event in 2018, 2019 and 2024, and joining the elite of the great international races such as the Vasaloppet and the Birkebeinerrennet.
The race route runs along two main variants: the 70-kilometre classic race, which starts in Moena and, with a turnaround in Canazei, ends in Cavalese, and the 45-kilometre light version, which ends in Predazzo. The entire route crosses the Fiemme and Fassa valleys, offering diverse landscapes ranging from ski slopes to snow-covered forests.
The commitment required by the competition is significant. The race includes challenging climbs such as the Cascata and the famous ‘Mur de la Stria’, which are an important test of the athletes' endurance. But difficulty is an integral part of the appeal of the Marcialonga. Skiers are confronted with a course that alternates between challenging and easier sections, while at the same time enjoying a landscape of extraordinary beauty.
Every year, the race attracts more than 7000 participants from more than 30 countries, accompanied by the passionate cheering of the public that gathers along the route.
An opportunity to discover the Val di Fassa
The Marcialonga weekend involves the entire community, with a series of events designed for all ages. The youngest, up to 6 years old, can participate in the Marcialonga Baby, an initiative that introduces them to cross-country skiing. On Saturday, it is the turn of the Minimarcialonga, a non-competitive race for children from 6 to 12 years old, while youngsters from 14 to 20 years old compete in the Marcialonga Young. Then there is the Marcialonga Stars, a charity race in which athletes and celebrities compete to raise funds for LILT, the Italian League for the Fight against Cancer.
Finally, to recall the origins of the event, there is the Marcialonga Story, a parade celebrating the history of the competition, with athletes wearing period equipment and clothing.
This event transforms the Val di Fassa into a living, breathing stage, where sport becomes the key to discovering an area rich in history and identity. The villages along the route, including Moena, Pozza di Fassa and Canazei, are authentic treasure troves of Ladin culture, where tradition lives on in the landscapes, language and customs.
The entire community of the Fiemme and Fassa Valleys takes centre stage throughout the event. About 1400 people including schools, traders, tour operators and residents actively contribute to its organisation, with a commitment that guarantees its success. The enthusiasm during these days is contagious.
